Drywall planning guide

Drywall, plasterboard, and gyprock estimates need both sheet area and installation context. Sheet orientation, ceiling height, openings, butt joints, waste, screw spacing, and finish level all affect what you need to buy.

Use this calculator to estimate sheets and supporting materials for walls or ceilings before you price a job. For better accuracy, measure each wall group separately and subtract only large openings that will not be sheeted.

What to confirm

• Choose sheet length to reduce joints where possible.
• Increase waste for small rooms, closets, angled ceilings, and many openings.
• Use moisture, fire, acoustic, or impact-rated board where the room requires it.
• Check screw, tape, compound, bead, and primer needs as separate finish materials.

System limits

The result is a planning estimate. Fire separation, wet-area lining, ceiling fixing, acoustic ratings, and rated wall systems should be checked against the relevant product system before work starts.

For larger rooms, separate walls and ceilings into different estimates. Ceiling sheets often need different lifting, fixing, and joint planning than walls, and separating them makes it easier to check whether the selected board length is practical.
