Drywall Calculator
Sheets, optional screws, and rough cost.
Drywall / Plasterboard / Gyprock Calculator
Estimate how many wall sheets to buy from wall size, sheet size, wall count, waste allowance, and simple layout orientation. Optional opening deductions and screw-pack fields add extra guidance without blocking the core sheet answer.

Drywall planning guide
Drywall, plasterboard, and gyprock estimates need both sheet area and installation context. Sheet orientation, ceiling height, openings, butt joints, waste, screw spacing, and finish level all affect what you need to buy.
Use this calculator to estimate sheets and supporting materials for walls or ceilings before you price a job. For better accuracy, measure each wall group separately and subtract only large openings that will not be sheeted.
What to confirm
- Choose sheet length to reduce joints where possible.
- Increase waste for small rooms, closets, angled ceilings, and many openings.
- Use moisture, fire, acoustic, or impact-rated board where the room requires it.
- Check screw, tape, compound, bead, and primer needs as separate finish materials.
System limits
The result is a planning estimate. Fire separation, wet-area lining, ceiling fixing, acoustic ratings, and rated wall systems should be checked against the relevant product system before work starts.
For larger rooms, separate walls and ceilings into different estimates. Ceiling sheets often need different lifting, fixing, and joint planning than walls, and separating them makes it easier to check whether the selected board length is practical.
Worked drywall example
A 3 m by 2.4 m wall has 7.2 square metres of area. With 1200 mm by 2400 mm sheets, the area count suggests 3 sheets, but the layout may still require extra sheets depending on orientation, joints, and openings.
Drywall planning should also consider screws, tape, compound, corner bead, primer, and board type. Wet areas, fire-rated walls, ceilings, and acoustic assemblies may need specific products rather than standard wall board.
Drywall calculator FAQ
Why does layout orientation matter?
Orientation changes which sheet dimension spans the wall height versus the wall length, which changes the layout-based sheet count.
Can I deduct doors and windows separately?
Add doors and windows together in the opening-area field if you want to subtract them from the wall area.
