Decking Board Calculator
Boards, optional fasteners, and rough cost.
Decking Board Calculator
Estimate how many decking boards to buy from deck size, board size, gap, and board direction. Optional joist spacing and screw-pack inputs add a simple fastener estimate without changing the core board count workflow.

Decking board planning guide
Decking estimates depend on deck size, board width, gap, board length, trimming waste, and whether boards run in a simple straight pattern or include picture framing, breaker boards, or angled sections.
Use this calculator for a first pass at board counts and optional fastener packs. It is most useful when the deck shape is close to rectangular and the board direction is already chosen.
Planning checks
- Include the intended board gap because it changes the number of rows.
- Allow extra length for trimming ends square after installation.
- Add more waste for diagonal boards, borders, stairs, and complex deck edges.
- Match fastener type to board material, exposure, and manufacturer requirements.
Before construction
Final deck design should also check span tables, joist spacing, ventilation, waterproofing, balustrades, stairs, and local building rules. The material count is only one part of a safe deck project.
When board lengths are available in several stock sizes, compare the calculator result against a simple cutting plan. A slightly longer board can sometimes reduce joins, visible butt ends, and wasted offcuts even if the raw board count looks similar.
Worked decking example
A 4.8 m by 3.6 m deck using 140 mm boards with 5 mm gaps needs roughly 25 board runs across the width. If boards are sold in 5.4 m lengths and each run can be made from one board, the calculator rounds the estimate to whole boards and then adds waste.
Decking waste depends on board direction, stagger pattern, board lengths available, and whether joins must land on joists. Add extra allowance for picture-frame borders, breaker boards, stairs, ramps, or areas with many short cuts.
Decking calculator FAQ
Why does board direction matter?
Changing direction swaps which deck dimension is split into board runs and which is covered by board widths plus gaps.
Do I need joist spacing to use this?
No. Joist spacing is only used for the optional fastener estimate, not the main board count.
