Nail / Screw Count Calculator

Fastener totals from sheet size and spacing.

Nail / Screw Count Calculator

Work out fasteners per sheet, board, or panel from the support spacing and fastener spacing. Sheet dimensions and spacing now use separate natural unit defaults for metric and imperial workflows.

Fastener Inputs

Pack and price fields
Optional. Add a pack size and price to convert the allowance total into a store purchase estimate.
Example: a 2400 mm × 1200 mm sheet over 450 mm joists with nails every 200 mm gives 42 fasteners per sheet. If you then enter a 1000-fastener box size, the calculator can also round up the number of packs to buy.

Fastener planning guide

Fastener counts are easy to underestimate because the visible sheet area is only part of the job. A reliable estimate starts with the number of sheets or boards, then checks how many support lines each sheet crosses and how closely fasteners need to be spaced along those supports.

Use this calculator when you already know the panel size, support spacing, and sheet quantity. It is useful for a first shopping estimate for subfloor sheets, decking boards, wall linings, fencing panels, and similar layouts where fasteners repeat in a grid.

What affects the result

Before buying fasteners

Compare the estimate with the product fixing schedule, edge spacing requirements, corrosion rating, and local code expectations for the material you are installing. Exterior projects often need coated or stainless fasteners, while interior linings may specify a different head type, shank, or screw gauge.

Worked fastener example

A small subfloor job with 12 sheets, 450 mm support spacing, and 200 mm fastener spacing can use hundreds of fasteners before waste is added. Enter the sheet size first, check the supports per sheet, then add a 5% to 10% allowance for dropped fasteners, edge rows, and missed counts.

If the result says 1,120 fasteners and the box contains 1,000, the shopping decision is two boxes even though the second box is only partly used. That spare quantity is useful on site because fasteners are often lost, bent, or needed for blocking and edge details.

Fastener calculator FAQ

Should I calculate sheets first?
Usually yes. Work out the sheet or panel count first, then use that quantity here so the fastener estimate stays tied to the installed material count.

Does this replace manufacturer fastening schedules?
No. This is a planning calculator. Always confirm edge spacing, field spacing, and fastening rules against the product guidance and your installation requirements.
