Tile estimates need more than the visible area. Tile size, grout joints, pattern direction, cuts around fixtures, and the number of boxes all affect the final purchase quantity.
Use this calculator for floors, walls, splashbacks, shower walls, and other rectangular tiled areas. Enter the tiled area, tile or box coverage, and a waste allowance that reflects the pattern and number of cuts.
Before you buy tiles
- Increase waste for diagonal, herringbone, feature borders, and small rooms with many cuts.
- Keep spare tiles for future repairs, especially for discontinued or batch-sensitive lines.
- Confirm whether box coverage already includes grout spacing.
- Check shade, batch, slip rating, substrate, waterproofing, adhesive, and grout requirements.
Planning limits
The calculator helps with quantity planning, but installation systems and wet-area compliance should be confirmed against product guidance and local requirements. Shower and balcony areas may need waterproofing design before tile quantity becomes the main question.
Worked tile example
A 10 square metre floor with 300 mm by 600 mm tiles uses about 56 tiles before waste. With a 10% allowance, the estimate becomes 62 tiles. If each box contains 8 tiles, the practical purchase is 8 boxes.
Tile waste rises quickly with diagonal patterns, niches, border cuts, and rooms that are out of square. Keep spare tiles from the same batch because replacement tiles can vary slightly in shade, size, or surface finish.

Should I use tiles per box or box coverage?
Use either one. Box coverage is usually the most direct shopping input because it matches the label on many retail boxes.
Why does the calculator round up twice?
It first rounds up tile quantity to avoid false fractions of a tile, then rounds up purchase boxes because stores sell whole boxes.
